Kenya has achieved a historic milestone at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris by winning its first medal. The silver medal was earned by debutant Samson Opiyo, who delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s T7 long jump event.

Opiyo, who is in his final year of law studies at Kenyatta University, recorded a jump of 6.20 meters on his fourth attempt, securing second place. His performance was closely contested, as he finished just behind Argentina’s Brian Lionel, who clinched the gold medal with a remarkable leap of 6.24 meters. Brazilian athlete Cardoso Mateus also put forth a strong effort, securing the bronze medal with a season-best jump of 6.24 meters.

The 28-year-old journey to the podium was marked by steady improvement. He began with a jump of 5.73 meters, which he then improved to 5.83 meters on his first attempt. His third attempt saw him reach 5.88 meters, setting the stage for his final and most successful jump that earned him the silver medal.

Opiyo qualified for the Paris Paralympics at the World Para Athletics Championships held at the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium in Japan in May of this year.

This silver medal marks a historic moment for Kenya, as it is the country’s first medal in a Paralympic field event since 2008. That year, Mary Nakhumicha made headlines by winning silver in the javelin F57/58 Category.
