Several families were left in tears after their 10-roomed rented houses were brought down under unclear circumstances in Mkomani ward, Nyali, Mombasa county on Tuesday.
Hired goons brought down the houses, as residents watched in disbelief. Fatuma Rais Idhi, one of the affected tenants, said Mugema Auctioneers came last week and verbally gave them a two-day eviction notice. They resisted the eviction because they were not the owners. “We were surprised when they were given a verbal notice without any written document,” she said.
They said the land lord, Kipashio Family Trust, had been demanding Sh22,000 as the “ground rate”. IIdhi said a lawyer told them the rate doesn’t exist under devolution system. The lawyer wrote to the auctioneers but they did not reply.
