Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli faced cross-examination by advocates today, where his responses were perceived as genuine and sincere.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi, presiding over the session, noted that Masengeli appeared remorseful and regretted the situation that led to his conviction and sentencing.
“This court is convinced that Masengeli regrets and is generally remorseful for the situation he finds himself in,” stated Justice Mugambi.
The judge emphasized that the judiciary’s primary concern is to uphold the rule of law and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their position, respect court orders.
“The intention of this court was not to punish Mr. Masengeli for the sake of it but to ensure that the sentence restores the dignity and the authority of this court,” Justice Mugambi added.
Masengeli, who took the stand earlier to express his apologies, explained that his actions were not intentional and resulted from urgent national security duties in Northern Kenya that required his full attention.

His respectful demeanor and evident regret during cross-examination seemed to resonate with the court, reinforcing his commitment to respecting the judicial process.
This development comes after a challenging period in which Masengeli’s role in the handling of a high-profile case involving the disappearance of three individuals from Kitengela had raised questions.
However, recent revelations confirmed in court today that the individuals had been found, provided some relief to the embattled police official.
The court is now deliberating on whether to accept Masengeli’s apology and vacate his conviction and sentence.
Justice Mugambi reiterated that the purpose of the court’s decision is to reinforce its authority and ensure that justice prevails, serving as a reminder of the accountability expected from those in positions of power.
