The Kenya Forest Service (KFS), in collaboration with the I&M Foundation, has embarked on a transformative project to construct an electric fence around the Sanctuary Block of Ngong Road Forest.

In a public notice by the KFS the 14.2-kilometer perimeter fencing initiative, aimed at enhancing forest protection and conservation, is scheduled for completion in April 2025.

“The Kenya Forest Service with the support of the I&M Foundation has commenced the construction of an electric fence around the sanctuary block of Ngong Road Forest. This transformative initiative of electrically fencing off the 14.2 KM perimeter of the Santuary Block is projected to be complete in April 2025,” read the notice.

Ngong Road Forest, was gazetted in 1932 and designated as a Central Government Forest Reserve in 1964, spans 1,224.4 hectares.

According to the notice by KFS it includes 886.72 hectares of natural forest and 337.68 hectares of plantations.

The forest is divided into five administrative blocks: Miotoni, Lenana, Karen, Sanctuary, and Bomas.

The Sanctuary Block, the largest of these, covers 695.3 hectares and features diverse vegetation, including shrubs, grasslands, and eucalyptus plantations.

The fencing project integrates a six-meter-wide buffer zone to enhance forest management. Implemented as part of a Participatory Forest Management Plan, this initiative reflects a strong partnership between KFS and the Community Forest Association.

“As a safeguard for effective and efficient management, a six meter wide path will be created along the 14.2 kilometer perimeter,” the notice read in part.

The fence will protect the forest’s fragile ecosystem, spur natural regeneration, and provide controlled access for local communities and visitors.

Additionally, the I&M Foundation will fund additional infrastructure, including ranger houses, a ranger outpost, and washroom facilities.

The Foundation is also set to rehabilitate 40 hectares within the Sanctuary Block.
