The Ministry of Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir, has revealed plans to construct a modern traffic management system in Nairobi aimed at alleviating traffic congestion.

“This afternoon, I witnessed the signing of a contract between the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Samsung C&T for Phase 1 of Nairobi’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and the Traffic Management Centre (TMC). This phase includes the geometric improvement of 25 junctions,” stated the CS.

This extensive upgrade is expected to significantly enhance traffic flow and safety within the city.

According to the CS, the project entails a thorough design and modification of junction layouts to ensure they can effectively accommodate traffic demands.

“The project involves detailed design and upgrades to the junction configurations to ensure they can adequately handle traffic demand. This comprehensive upgrade will greatly improve traffic flow and safety in our city,” added CS Chirchir.

Furthermore, a variety of ITS field equipment will be deployed, including traffic signals, signal controllers, closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) above-ground detectors, Variable Message Signs (VMS), Vehicle Enforcement Systems (VES), and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS).

The CS further revealed that the construction of the Traffic Management Centre located at Cabanas on Mombasa Road is scheduled to commence in March 2025.

“The Construction of the Traffic Management Centre at Cabanas, Mombasa Road is set to start in March 2025,” the Transport CS said.
