A 43-year-old woman, Kamanthe Makato, has been arrested for allegedly murdering her 71-year-old mother, Mukeli Makato in a horrifying attack, on February 18, 2025.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mukeli was out gathering firewood with her grandchild when Kamanthe joined them.
A misunderstanding between the mother and daughter quickly escalated into violence, leading Kamanthe to fatally hack her mother with a panga. The terrified grandchild ran for help, raising the alarm.
“The victim, 71-year-old Mukeli Makato, was fetching firewood with her grandchild when Kamanthe joined them. A misunderstanding erupted between the mother and daughter escalating into a violent frenzy that ended in horror as Kamanthe violently attacked her mother, hacking her to death. The terrified grandchild fled the scene, screaming for help,” the DCI explained.
In response to the alarm,police officers arrived at the gruesome scene to find Mukeli’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, with deep cuts from her head down to her legs.
“Responding swiftly to the distress call, police officers arrived to find Mukeli’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, bearing multiple deep cuts from her head down to her legs. The murder weapon, a blood-stained panga, was recovered at the scene and retained as exhibit,” added the detectives.
Mukeli’s body has since been taken to Kilome Nursing Home Hospital Morgue, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
Meanwhile, Kamanthe is in police custody and is undergoing processing ahead of her court appearance.
