The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has opposed the temporary release of Juja Member of Parliament, George Koimburi, citing a history of absconding court proceedings.
In an application filed at a Kiambu court, the DPP, supported by an affidavit from an Inspector of Police attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ (DCI) Serious Crime Unit, argued that Koimburi had previously failed to appear in court on six occasions after being charged with forging academic certificates.
According to the Prosecution counsels the legislator had violated his bail conditions, leading to the forfeiture of his Ksh.100,000 cash bail.
“Prosecution Counsels Evelyn Onunga and Benjamin Kelwon told court the legislator failed to adhere to the terms and conditions of the bail and the court ordered for the forfeiture of his cash bail of Ksh.100,000,” stated the ODPP.
A warrant of arrest was issued on April 6, 2022, and remained in force until it was executed on February 18, 2025.
The prosecution maintained that Koimburi posed a high flight risk and urged the court to deny him bond.
“To ensure the ends of justice are met in this case, it is of the prosecution view that the accused person be denied bond on the first instance,” stated Onunga.
Koimburi, who appeared in court on Wednesday, faces six charges, including forging academic certificates and uttering false documents.
