Kenya Adjourns South Sudan Mediation Talks Until March 2025 to Facilitate Further Consultations

Kenya has temporarily adjourned the ongoing mediation process between the South Sudan Government and the Opposition Hold-Out Group until March 2025.

This decision follows a request from the South Sudanese Government delegation to allow for further consultations that will inform the next steps in the peace process.

“Met the Opposition Hold-Out Group of South Sudan and agreed, at the request of the South Sudan Government delegation, that the mediation process that has been going on in Nairobi adjourns until March 2025 to facilitate consultations that will inform the way forward,” stated President Ruto.

The mediation, which has been ongoing in Nairobi for the past 11 months at the request of President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, aims to resolve the political stalemate that has led to a serious humanitarian crisis and security challenges in the region.

During the latest round of talks, the Opposition Hold-Out Group was represented by a high-level delegation led by General Pagan Amum.

Other members of the delegation included General Paul Malong, General Stephen Buoy, General Mario Lada, Mr. Lual Dau, and Dr. Cirinho.

Kenya remains committed to facilitating dialogue and fostering peace in South Sudan, ensuring that all parties have the opportunity to engage in meaningful consultations to chart a sustainable path forward.

The adjournment of the talks is expected to provide space for deeper engagement and discussions that will contribute to a lasting resolution of the conflict.

As a key regional mediator, Kenya will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.
