Two Children Die In India After Kite String Slashed Their Throats

Saanchi Goyal, 3, and Harry, 4, were looking out through the sunroof of their cars in different parts of Delhi when sharp strings slit their throats.

Zafar Khan, 22, died in the same manner when he was riding his motorbike. Glass-coated strings are used to bring down competitors’ kites, but they also end up injuring and killing people.

Many Indians fly kites to celebrate festivals and important occasions like the Independence Day, which is celebrated on 15 August.

Both incidents happened in Delhi when the youngsters were looking out from a car’s sunroof.Police have registered a case against an unidentified individual, but authorities say it is very difficult to establish blame. In recent years, cheap synthetic and nylon kite strings from China have flooded Indian markets.

The imported product is coated with powdered glass, making it both extremely sharp and strong.  The Delhi government is going to impose a ban on its sale and use, with people violating the ban facing up to five years in jail and a fine.
