The Ministry of Health yesterday launched the kidney transplant services at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital ( KUTRRH).
This is after the hospital successfully performed it’s first two kidney transplant surgeries on 7th and 8th May 2025, with assistance from a team of kidney specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The hospital reported that all the four patients, two donors and two recipients, were recuperating well post- surgery.
The Principal Secretary for medical services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, led the official launch, joined by the Acting CEO, Ms. Zeinab Gura, and Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Senator Kembi Gitura.
The PS applauded the hospital’s team for achieving the milestone stating that, “this milestone reflects our commitment to expanding specialized healthcare services locally and reducing dependence on overseas treatment.”
KUTRRH had been working for three years in preparation of the renal transplant centre, with the PS highlighting this effort.
“This has included training staff at Apollo Hospital in India, acquiring specialized equipment, and building collaborative partnerships,” stated the PS.
The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital team who aided in the first kidney transplants will also impart mentorship for the hospital’s capacity internally.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) facilitated the surgeries, in accordance with the goals of the Universal Health Coverage, through access to specialized renal care.
The hospital continues efforts to provide kidney services, with a donor recipient pair set for transplant, and eight others under evaluation.
