In a decisive response to a tragic shooting incident in Nakuru’s Bondeni area, the National Police Service (NPS) has arrested seven suspects and recovered a deadly AK-47 rifle believed to have been used by the gang in their criminal activities.

The incident, which occurred on June 1, 2025, claimed the life of one police officer and left two others injured, prompting swift action from law enforcement.

”Officers were in pursuit of armed criminals when a gunfire exchange occurred, unfortunately leading to the death of one officer and leaving two others injured,” read part of the press statement released by the NPS on June 2,2025.

The statement, signed by Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and NPS Spokesperson, detailed how the police acted quickly to apprehend three suspects at the scene.

A subsequent manhunt led to the arrest of four additional suspects at a lodging in Nakuru’s Tahidi area.

“Upon interrogation, the suspects led officers to a location where an AK-47 rifle was recovered,” the statement revealed, highlighting the weapon’s suspected role in the gang’s operations.

The injured officers are currently receiving treatment, and the NPS expressed its condolences to the fallen officer’s loved ones.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of the fallen officer and wish a speedy recovery to the injured officers,” Nyaga stated.

The NPS reaffirmed its dedication to public safety, noting, “The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property across the country. We assure the public that we will continue to pursue and dismantle criminal networks to ensure the safety and security of all Kenyans.”

The incident follows a recent wave of criminal activity in Nakuru, including a robbery at an M-Pesa shop in the Baraka area of Menengai, where a 25-year-old man was killed.

Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara confirmed the arrests and the recovery of the firearm, signaling a strong stance against rising crime in the region.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as investigations continue to ensure justice is served.
