The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, alongside International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya Executive Director Eric Mukoya and Amnesty International Kenya Director Houghton Irungu, issued a call for justice.
This follows Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire’s presser, where they expressed the torture they underwent after being arrested in Tanzania.
The leaders urged the East African Community (EAC) and the international community to press the Government of Tanzania to hold accountable police officers and their commanding officers responsible for the alleged torture and assault of prominent activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire.
The joint statement condemned the reported human rights violations, emphasizing the need for swift and transparent investigations to ensure those responsible face justice.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to advocating for the protection of human rights across the region and called for solidarity in addressing impunity.
Further details regarding the incident and the activists’ current conditions were not disclosed during the briefing.
As of now, the EAC and Tanzanian authorities have not responded to the allegations.
