The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has achieved a significant victory in the fight against wildlife crime, securing a 14-year prison sentence and a KSh 3 million fine for an individual convicted of illegal possession and trafficking of endangered wildlife trophies in Baringo County.

“This landmark conviction sends a clear message to those involved in the illegal wildlife trade: such crimes will face severe consequences,” the ODPP stated on June 5, 2025.

The case, prosecuted under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013, involved the unlawful possession and trade of trophies from endangered species.

The court’s ruling in Baringo establishes a strong precedent for enforcing strict penalties to combat poaching and trafficking.

“The 14-year sentence and KSh 3 million fine reflect the gravity of the offense and Kenya’s unwavering commitment to protecting its natural heritage,” the ODPP emphasized in their statement.

The case targeted violations of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, which prohibits handling trophies from endangered species without a permit.

The successful prosecution was bolstered by collaborative efforts between the ODPP and law enforcement agencies, including the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

“The robust evidence gathered through this partnership was critical to securing this conviction,” added the ODPP.
