IG Kanja Sets Tone For Police Reform

Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja led a high-level National Police Service Commanders’ Conference at the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong’.

The day-long forum tackled critical issues ranging from strategic command and decision making in law enforcement, integrity and ethical leadership to community centered policing and inter-agency collaboration.

Speaking at the conference he reiterated that police conduct need to reflect the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and respect in all public interactions.

“I know corruption is not about the police alone. It is a societal problem actually. However as an organization we must address it from where we sit,” he stated.

He emphasized on the role of policing as a service to the people, not an imposition of authority.

He emphasized the importance of police leading by example, Quoting the former President Mwai Kibaki, “Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others”.

He reiterated that commanders’ conduct must reflect the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and respect in all public interactions, describing policing as a service to the people, not an imposition of authority.

Additionally he emphasized the critical role of police commanders in implementing the National Police Service Strategic Plan 2023–2027.

The strategy plan aims at transforming the National Police Service into a trusted, professional, and efficient institution.

He police to translate its objectives into meaningful outcomes that enhance policing across the country.

Furthermore, the Inspector General called for the establishment of clear communication channels and routine evaluation of police practices.

This, he emphasized, is to ensure that all officers adhere to high ethical and professional standards.

He added that the National Police Service remains committed to building a professional, well-equipped, and people-centred Police Service, dedicated to serving with honour and integrity.

In attendance was the Deputy Inspectors General of the Kenya Police Service, Mr. Eliud Lagat, and the Administration Police Service, Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, alongside the Director, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohammed Amin.
