Eliud Lagat, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG)of the Kenya Police Service (KPS), has stepped aside from office following pending investigations into Albert Ojwang’s death.
In a statement issued on Monday, the DIG stated that the decision was made in a “good and conscious thought.”
“In the good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities as The Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service, and in view of the ongoing investigations on the unfortunate incident of the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang, I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” read the statement in part.
The DIG additionally explained that his duties would temporarily be handled by his deputy until the investigation is finalized.
“The functions of the office will henceforth be performed by my deputy until completion of the investigations,” stated DIG Lagat.
Furthermore, he expressed his willingness to assist with the investigations of Ojwang’s death.
“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident. I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang for their great loss,” added the DIG.
Albert Ojwang’s death while in custody has sparked public outrage. The public is demanding justice and transparency in the activities leading to Ojwang’s death.
As the investigation progresses, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Central Police Station, Samson Talaam, and Police Constable James Mukhwana have been arrested in connection with the case.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also detained three civilians: Gin Ammitou Abwao, Collins Karani Ireri and Brian Mwaniki Njue, who were held at Central Police Station when Ojwang was also in custody.
