Following yesterday’s disturbing shooting incident, where police officers shot an unarmed civilian in Nairobi Central Business District, the National Police Service (NPS) has given an update to the public.

“The details of the two police officers arrested yesterday are as follows: No. 119413 Police Constable Klinzy Barasa Masinde and No. 117193 Police Constable Duncan Kiprono,” stated the NPS.

According to Muchiri Nyaga, the NPS Spokesperson, the two officers have now been interdicted and are currently being processed by the Homicide Team, DCI Headquarters, pending further action.

Additionally, the victim, identified as Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, is recuperating in stable condition at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi following successful surgery.

In a statement from the KNH CEO, Dr. William Sigilai, it was noted that upon arrival at the Accident and Emergency Department, he was critically ill with a gunshot wound to the head, resulting in severe brain injury and excessive bleeding.

“The emergency care team, led by the emergency physician, Dr. Janet Sugut, swung into action, stabilised his condition, and placed him on life support.

According to the KNH CEO, a CT scan of the brain confirmed that the bullet struck the left side of the head. The patient was then wheeled into the operating theatre at around 8:50 pm, where a complex and delicate surgery was conducted by a multidisciplinary team under the leadership of Dr. Sam Njiru, Consultant Neurosurgeon.

This procedure lasted two hours and the bullet was successfully removed. The patient was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remains on mechanical ventilation.

“While his condition is still critical, he is alive and under close, round-the-clock observation and care by our medical team,” stated the Doctor.

“The National Police Service (NPS) deeply regrets this unjustified act and commiserates with the victim and his family, while reaffirming its full commitment to ensuring justice is served,” NPS expressed.
