Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, on Thursday led a delegation of national leaders to Kijauri, Borabu Constituency, in Nyamira County, for a Women Empowerment Initiative hosted by area Woman Representative Hon. Jerusha Momanyi.

The event brought together leaders from across the country, including Majority Whip Hon. Sylvanus Osoro, in a show of solidarity toward promoting gender equality, economic inclusion, and grassroots development.

The initiative, championed by Hon. Momanyi, seeks to empower women to become self-reliant, speak out against societal injustices, and take up leadership roles in transforming their communities.

With a focus on restoring hope and uplifting vulnerable groups, the program is part of a broader effort to promote socio-economic transformation across Nyamira and the greater Gusii region.

In his address, Speaker Wetang’ula commended Hon. Momanyi’s commitment to empowering women and youth, noting that sustainable national development begins at the grassroots.

“When you uplift a woman, you uplift a family and, by extension, a whole community,” he said.

He further emphasized the need for inclusive policies that ensure women have equal access to economic opportunities and decision-making spaces.

A key highlight of the event was the issuance of cheques to various groups, including bodaboda self-help associations, youth-led enterprises, and women cooperatives.

The financial support is intended to boost small-scale businesses and local entrepreneurship, enabling community members to generate income and improve their livelihoods.

Hon. Momanyi called on women to embrace their potential and take an active role in shaping the future of their communities.

“This is not just about financial support; it’s about changing mindsets and creating opportunities for long-term impact,” she said.

The initiative was lauded as a model for other counties seeking to foster grassroots empowerment and social transformation.
