Three Suspects Arraigned Over Orchestrated Nairobi CBD Chaos

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Monday arraigned three men suspected to be behind the organized infiltration and violent disruption of demonstrations held in Nairobi on Tuesday, June 25, 2025.

The suspects  were presented before the Kibera Law Courts, where the prosecution detailed their alleged involvement in planning, mobilizing, and financing individuals who hijacked otherwise peaceful demonstrations.

The court heard that the trio’s coordinated actions led to widespread lawlessness in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), including looting, destruction of property, forced entry into buildings and business premises, and even attacks on police stations.

The prosecution argued that these actions posed a significant threat to national security and public order.

“The suspects John Mulingwa (alias Garang), Mark Amiani (alias Generali), and Francis Mutunge Mwangi (alias Chebukati)’s actions resulted in widespread destruction of property, looting, and forced entry into various buildings and business premises within Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), including attacks on police stations, thereby posing a serious threat to public safety and security,” stated the ODPP.

The suspects were apprehended on the night of June 27, 2025, while traveling aboard a Mombasa-bound vehicle and subsequently booked at Muthaiga Police Station.

However the prosecutors asked the court to detain the suspects for 21 days to enable investigative agencies to complete ongoing inquiries into multiple serious offences including arson, stealing, housebreaking, burglary, and malicious damage to property.

The prosecution also revealed that a notebook containing sensitive and critical intelligence was recovered during the arrest, alongside mobile phones whose forensic analysis is still underway.

“The investigating agencies also seek more time for proper collection and analysis of evidence, including forensic analysis of seized mobile phones and the recording of critical witness statements,” noted the ODPP.

To allow room for investigations, the court was requested to allow the suspects to be held in three separate facilities  Muthaiga, Gigiri and Capitol Hill Police Stations.

Principal Magistrate Irene Marcia Kahuya is set to deliver a ruling on the prosecution’s detention application on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
