Officer Klinzy Barasa to Face Muder Charges for Fatally Shooting Mask Vendor, Boniface Kariuki

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved a murder charge against Klinzy Barasa Masinde, the police officer who allegedly murdered Boniface Kariuki, a mask vendor, in Nairobi CBD.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the 32-year-old police constable, Klinzy Barasa Masinde, appeared before Justice Kanyi Kimondo in Milimani High Court.

He is alleged to have shot Boniface Kariuki on the 17th of June 2025 outside Imenti House, during protests held demanding justice for Albert Ojwang who died while in police custody.

Boniface later succumbed to head injuries while receiving treatment at  the Kenyatta Hospital.

Boniface Kariuki is yet to be buried on 18th July in Murang’a.

“Justice Kimondo directed that the suspect be remanded at Nairobi Remand Prison and undergo mental assessment before he is charged with murder,” stated the ODPP.

His colleague Duncan Kiprono, who was next to him during the incident has been acquitted.

Klinzy is expected to be presented to court on 28th July 2025 for plea taking.
