Malindi High Court Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Mugure Thande, has praised the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Lamu for its dedication to fostering collaboration among justice sector institutions.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), during a working tour of Lamu County aimed at enhancing partnerships between the Judiciary and the ODPP, Justice Thande paid a courtesy call to the Lamu ODPP office on Wednesday.

She was accompanied by Resident Magistrate, Hon. Flavian Mulama, and was welcomed by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Peter Birir, alongside Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Mohamed Ahmed.

“Mr. Birir underscored the importance of synergy among criminal justice institutions, noting that collaboration between the ODPP, Judiciary, and other agencies is essential for effective case management and public trust,” stated the ODPP.

He further noted that such coordination helps address systemic bottlenecks that slow justice delivery and expressed appreciation to judicial officers for their role in mentoring young legal professionals, including prosecutors.

“On her part, Justice Thande raised concern over the prevailing culture of revenge in Lamu, which has led to some witnesses withdrawing from court cases due to fear of retaliation,” said the ODPP.

She called for practical measures to safeguard witnesses and uphold the principles of a fair trial.

Emphasising the importance of legal integrity, she stated that the rule of law remains a cornerstone of national progress and urged all justice sector stakeholders to play their part in defending and promoting justice.

Furthermore, Justice Thande applauded the ODPP for establishing a child-friendly space to support minors who testify in court, describing it as a commendable step toward a more inclusive and sensitive justice system.

The visit reflects a shared commitment by the Judiciary and ODPP to strengthen the delivery of justice in Lamu County and beyond.
