The government has pledged to provide seedlings a move aimed at growing 15 billion trees by the year 2032.

According to President William Ruto, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), in partnership with the National Youth Service (NYS), will mobilise 15,000 NYS personnel to revive 300 forest nurseries nationwide.

In addition, the government will establish 17 mega nurseries with the capacity to produce two billion seedlings annually for distribution to Kenyans for planting in homes, schools, farms, institutions, and public spaces.

“To make this vision a reality, the government will provide seedlings across the country. The Kenya Forest Service, working with the National Youth Service, will mobilise 15,000 NYS personnel to revive 300 nurseries in all our forests and establish 17 mega nurseries to produce two billion seedlings every year for Kenyans to plant,” said President Ruto.

Speaking at State House Primary School during a tree planting session marking the Mazingira Day,  the head of state noted that the seedlings will include fruit trees to boost not only food security but also to create opportunities for export, agro-processing and job opportunities.

Additionally, the tree planting initiative will protect water catchments and reduce effects of climate change.

As the country moves toward the 15-billion-tree target, Kenyans are encouraged to take personal initiative by planting and nurturing trees in their communities.
