MMU peaceful demos turn violent

Students from Multimedia University (MMU) today had peaceful demonstration which later turn violent as police ended up firing teargas and rubber bullets.

The demos were as a result of increased accidents involving students and Rongai matatus.

Usage of teargas and rubber bullets made the demonstration violent as the police tried to disperse the protesters. Police are also accused of using  ‘live bullets’ to unarmed students..

The demonstrations by the students led to shortage of vehicles on that root leaving passengers stranded for five hours until the demos ended.

Demonestrating students blamed the matauts for not following traffic rules, driving recklessly and causing fatal accidents.

The recent accident that occurred last week claimed the life of a first year student at MMU, and in response, the students took to the streets to demonstrate.

Apart from accidents, some of the demonestrators claimed that the Rongai matatus makangas have been sexually harassing the female students from the university.

The student, Karen Chepkemoi, was hit by a speeding matatu operating under Ongata Line Sacco while she was crossing the road outside the University gate, according to the students.
