4 clubs benefit from Olunga transfer

Gor Mahia FC, leaders Tusker FC, Thika United and Division Two Liberty Sports have received undisclosed payments from the transfer of Harambee Stars striker, Michael Olunga, to Swedish side Djurgaardens IF.

This was confirmed through a statement sent to newsrooms on Wednesday by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chief executive, Robert Muthomi

“One of our priorities as an FA is to not only ensure that clubs generate income from gate collections, sponsorships and player transfers but also from unexploited revenue streams like the FIFA solidarity contribution mechanism, which allows clubs to be compensated by getting a share of an eventual transfer fee for developing players, this can be an additional revenue stream for grass-root clubs,” Muthomi declared.

“In this perspective, we have in the last six months or so engaged the Swedish FA and Olunga’s current club Djurgaardens IF, in an effort aimed at ensuring that all documented local clubs that Olunga played for and who appear in his FKF player passport benefit from the player’s transfer,” he explained.

Olunga started his career at Liberty after being identified by former Stars head coach, Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee before moving to Tusker on loan, a team the latter has a rich history in coaching, leading them to local and regional titles.

However, the lanky forward suffered at the Brewers, scoring only thrice in 15 games, since they were not conditioned to exploit his strengths of seeking space inside the box or race to balls to strike.
