At least 12 people have been confirmed dead after a suspected Al Shabaab attack in Mandera. The militants attacked a lodging hosting non-locals using grenades and IEDs on Tuesday morning.
A total of ten people including four who were wounded in the attack have been rescued from the lodging that had 33 occupants.
Mandera East OCPD Ezekiel Sing’oe said some of those killed were teachers who were visiting for KCSE set books performances in Mandera.
“It is true there was an attack. Rescue efforts are ongoing,” Mandera county commander Job Boronjo said. The gunmen believed to be al-Shabaab militants escaped towards the Somalia border.
This is the second such attack targeting non-locals in less than a month.
On October 5th, six people were killed in a suspected al-Shabaab attack on a residential plot in Bulla public works in Mandera town.
The incident happened as the tenants were asleep. Those affected were non locals. Police said the attackers shot at the victims randomly after they had broken into the plot.
