Nigerian national women’s football team coach Florence Omagbemi says the Kenyan national team was a tough opponent, even though they beat them 4-0 in their last group match of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nigerian Super Falcons beat Mali 6-0 in the opening match of the tournament before going on to draw 1-1 with Ghana.
Kenya, on the other hand, had lost 3-1 to both Ghana and Mali in earlier matches. And going into Saturday match, various officials from the Nigeria camp were confident of a severe goal rout against the Kenyan Starlets, some even threatening an 8-0 defeat.
But coach Omagbemi was modest, after the win saying that her team did what it needed to do.
“The Kenyan team was quite tough but my girls played well and they did exactly what was required of them. We won by a great scoreline and we hope to maintain this fine form in the next leg of the tournament,” said Omagbemi.
The nine-time champions, who currently hold the title, will face Group A runners-up South Africa in the semi-finals on Tuesday 29 November.
