Women leaders have indicted public governance officials for allegedly abetting defilement cum rape cases in the local community.
The male gender was equally condemned for perpetrating the violation of the girl-child through coercion.
They claimed men in the community seemed to be grappling with a psychological problem whose attention needed urgent intervention.
Speaking in Kisii town after inspecting a rescue centre for gender-based violence victims under construction, Kisii county women rep. Janet Ong’era decried the rampant cases of defilement in the region.
Alluding to an incident from Marani sub county where a father violated his six year old daughter, Ong’era defended existing legal structures in the country.
According to her, there were adequate laws to deal with defilement/rape cases but the enforcers who included administrators appeared to sleep on their job.
The women rep questioned why action had never been taken against known people who defiled and murdered two minors in Kenyenya sub county.
Nominated MCA Josephine Ombati accused fathers of throwing societal values to the wind and turning on their daughters.
She called for drastic cultural change in the community if women and children’s rights were to be respected.
Bathsheba Sanaya, Maaendeleo ya Wanawake Chairperson in the county criticized some administrators’ weaknesses of holding Kangaroo courts to settle such cases out of court.
Sanaya who is also a nominated MCA faulted some mothers’ habit to conceal defilement of their daughters in the pretext of protecting their marriages.
