It looked to be a longshot for Arsenal to finish top of its group over PSG heading into the clubs’ final matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
PSG led in away goals and both Arsenal and the Parisians were expected to win matches against Basel and Ludogorets, respectively, and finish even on points.
But the Gunners cruised in their match against FC Basel, winning 4-1 on the back of a Lucas Perez hat trick, fulfilling their end of that deal.
On the other han PSG lacked edge in a tough away fixture in Bulgaria and drew 2-2 with Ludogorets to finish second in Group A while handing Arsenal the top spot.
Perez was Arsenal’s lone signing this summer at striker, a position at which Gunner fans have long cried for reinforcements.
However, the arrival of Perez coincided with Alexis Sanchez’s ascendency in that role, as well as a run of form from Oliver Giroud coming off the bench, limiting his minutes this season.
