Atletico Madrid Wins Their Opening Match In Their New Stadium

Antoine Griezmann christened Atletico Madrid’s new stadium by scoring the only goal of the game in a La Liga victory over Malaga.

The France striker darted in front of defender Luis Hernandez to meet Angel Correa’s low cross just after the hour in front of about 63,000 fans.

Atletico move up to third in the table, a point behind Real Sociedad and four off leaders Barcelona.

Diego Simeone’s side have played their first three league games away.

Atletico left the Vicente Calderon at the end of last season and were granted permission to play away from home this term as work was completed at their new home.

And twelve hours of celebrations had been planned around the first match at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Saturday.

Bottom side Malaga could easily have put a dampener on the party however with striker Borja Baston – on loan from Swansea – forcing a good save from Jan Oblak in the first half and substitute Diego Rolan going close in the final minute.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Barcelona maintained their 100% start by coming from behind to beat Getafe 2-1. Former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho scored the winner late on.

On-loan Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira provided the cross for former Bolton loanee Rodrigo to head home as Valencia drew 1-1 at Levante.

Former Spain winger Joaquin scored twice as Real Betis beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-1.
