Baringo woman charged for dumping her infant in toilet

 

A middle aged woman was yesterday arraigned at a Kabarnet court charged with infanticide after she allegedly dumped her infant moments after giving birth.

Diana Muyanda is said to have committed the act on January 19, this year, at around 8pm at Marigat location, Baringo South Constituency where she unlawfully dumped the infant in the toilet after birth and she succumbed.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges when she appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Caroline Ateya.

The prosecution counsel Casmir Obiero prayed to the court that the accused be taken for mental assessment at Baringo County Referral hospital, Kabarnet, as a postmortem is conducted on the infant to ascertain the exact cause of the death.

The senior resident magistrate ordered the accused to be taken to hospital for mental assessment while she will be remanded at Kabarnet police station until the case is brought for mentioned on January 30.

In the same court a 22-year-old man was charged with an attempted incest contrary to section 20(2) of the Sexual Offense Act No.3 of 2006.

According to the charge sheet, Franklin Komen is accused that on January 3, this year, at around 9pm at Barketiew village, Kapkata location in Baringo North Sub County, he willfully and unlawfully demanded for sex from his 16-year-old cousin.

When the charges leveled against him were read before Senior Resident Magistrate Caroline Ateya, the accused denied committing the said offense.

The magistrate released him on a personal bond of Sh 100,000 with one surety of the same amount.

Ateya directed the case to be heard on March 7 when four witnesses are set to testify to prove the case.
