Breastfeeding, one of the most natural acts in the world, takes practice. Learning how to hold and support your baby in a comfortable position for you calls for coordination and patience.
Yet finding a nursing hold that works for you and your infant is well worth the effort. After all, the two of you will spend many hours breastfeeding every day. However, you and your baby should try and find out the most comfortable positions. Here are some time-tested positions to try, plus tips to make nursing go smoothly.
The cradle position
This is the most commonly used breastfeeding position during the first weeks of life. This position allows more control when holding the baby. In this position, the baby’s ear, shoulder, and hip will form a line and the baby will be chest to breast with you.
Cross-cradle position
This is another excellent and the one mostly used frequently when learning the process of breastfeeding. It gives maximum control in holding your baby and bring her to the breast.
Football land
This is an excellent position for mother who has a Caesarean birth, or large breasts, large baby or a premature baby. To use this method, place the baby on the side at your side, support the baby’s head in your hand and her back along your arm as in the case of cross-cradle. But this time the baby is beside you with baby legs tucked under your arm.
Side-Lying Position
In this position, both you and your baby lie on your sides facing each other, chest to breast. Baby is cradle in your arm with her head in the crook of your elbow. Baby’s back is supported by your forearm on the same side you are nursing the child. Use pillows to support your head, back, and legs during this feeding.
