Chief Justice Martha Koome has joined the nation and the women’s movement in mourning the loss of a trailblazer and a steadfast champion of women’s rights, Hon. Catherine Nyamato.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched,” she mourned.
In a statement, CJ Koome condoled Hon. Catherine Nyamato as a remarkable leader who dedicated her life to advancing the well-being of her community and the cause of gender equality.
“I had the privilege of working alongside her in civil society, where her unwavering commitment to the rights of women was both inspiring and deeply impactful. Her legacy is defined by her fierce determination and tireless advocacy for women’s empowerment,” she expressed.
According to the CJ, Nyamato made history as the first Gusii woman to serve as a Member of Parliament between 1995 and 1997, a milestone not only for her but also for countless women who saw in her a symbol of possibility and progress.
Additionally, she described Hon. Nyamato as a vocal advocate against harmful cultural practices, particularly Female Genital Mutilation and dedicated herself to the empowerment of women and girls.
“Her activism helped catalyse critical conversations and reforms within the Gusii community and the national landscape,” she noted.
The President of the Supreme Court of Kenya further noted that beyond her public service, Catherine’s quiet but impactful philanthropy was one of the most heartwarming aspects of her life.
Stories abound of how she provided financial assistance to those in need, enabling many vulnerable individuals to secure their livelihoods and rebuild their lives. She did not simply advocate for a better world, she built it, person by person, through acts of compassion and generosity.
“Over the years, we developed a cherished friendship, and I will always remember her with admiration and gratitude,” said Chief Justice Koome.
“May her soul rest in eternal peace,” she condoled.
