Cliff Mboya Arrested Over Sh5 Million in Bank Account

A Nairobi businessman who recently announced his presidential bid in the 2017 election spent the weekend in police cells after being arrested on Friday.

Cliff Mboya was apprehended after some Sh5 Million was found in his bank account without proper explanation of its source.

The businessman was held at Kileleshwa Police Station and was to be arraigned in court on Monday after authorities questioned the source of the money that was deposited in his account in January.

Mboya, however, insisted on his innocence explaining that he had been expecting some Sh10 Million from a previous deal and therefore, was not suspicious of the millions in question.

“I am a businessman and during the time the money came to my account, I was expecting Sh10 Million from South Sudan. When the Sh5,004,993 came in, I knew it was part of the Sh10 Million I was expecting,” he stated.

In a protest letter to the bank, the businessman asked why the financial institution failed to probe the money which was deposited months ago.

“I believe banks are supposed to inquire about any abnormal deposits, especially transactions above Sh1 Million,” he wrote.

Two weeks ago, Mboya expressed his interest in the presidential race assuring that if elected, he would deal with corruption including introducing a law to punish corruption suspects with a death penalty.

He also proposed to move the Capital City of the country together with State House from Nairobi to Isiolo as advocated for in the Vision 2030 plan.
