Teachers’ issue seven-day strike notice to the government and ministry of education to close all secondary schools or they proceed to strikes.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) chairman Omboko Milemba has demanded for unconditional rrelease of both students and teachers who had been linked to arson cases.
KUPPET said that after seven days (7), if the government will not have closed all the schools or they will face teachers strike.
Speaking to the media Thursday morning, KUPPET deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima also ruled out the involvement of teachers in the wave of unrest witnessed in schools across the country.
KUPPET Chairman, Milemba demanded for an unconditional release of arrested students and teachers who have been linked to arson attacks in schools.
Milemba has echoed the words of KNUT Secretary General who had earlier advised the Education Secretary Cabinet, Fred Matiang’i, to close all the schools in order to avoid more arson cases.
KUPPET also opposed a directive by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to Principals and senior teachers to reside in school compounds saying the directive is against standards of fair labour practices.
Milemba said it was unfair for Education CS Fred Matiang’i to intimidate principals yet the current situation is “more than meets the eye”.
“If the CS had closed schools as recommended earlier, those that burnt since then could not have been destroyed,” he said.
Dormitories in more than 115 schools have been burnt for the past two months, the spate of fires continues to escalate by day.
The latest to report an incident is Garbatula national school in Isiolo county – which was razed on Thursday.
