Coast clerics aim at eliminating radicalization

Religious leaders at the Coast under Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics (CICC) launched a five-year strategic plan to promote peace and security in the region by engaging youth in various activities.

According to CICC chair Wilbard Lagho, the move was aimed at ensuring peaceful co-existence across all religions in the region.

“In places such as Likoni where cases of insecurity are rife we have embarked on what we call connector projects such as water projects where youth from both Christian and Islamic faith share the resource together and feel as one family,” said Lagho on the sidelines of the launch in Mombasa.

Children in African societies are amongst the most vulnerable segment of the civilian populations during conflicts and crises. Wars and conflicts put children in a situation where every right of a child could be violated.

Due to its exposure to different visitors who camp at the coast for holidays and trips, youths from the coast have been highly exposed to radicalization with even some joining terror groups following financial offer and fake promises.

Earlier, the government had called upon those who had been radicalized to voluntarily turn themselves in and in return, the government would offer guidance and counseling.
