COMMUNITY LAND REGISTRATION IN PASTORAL COUNTIES

In curbing boundaries conflicts as well as cattle rustling in the pastoral counties, over 12 counties met in a Machakos Hotel to deliberate on the way forward where they agreed land registration was the key solution in solving these issues.
Addressing the media, four CEC drawn from Isiolo, Samburu, Baringo and Marsabit counties said land registration will assist in reducing clashes in their counties as residents will know their boundaries unlike in the past where they didn’t know.
Frontier Counties Development Council chair person, Kalumo Bullo said that all the 12 counties have given the land which should be registered according to the law as they are now taking stock of the parcels.
“The steps are spelled out in the law but what we want is to fast track keeping in mind that community land won’t be registered according to ethnicity perspective”, she added.
On his sediments, Yussuf Dahir CEC lands Isiolo said that the importance of registering land in their counties is to get proper process in land demarcation.
“This will help in solving boundary issues as most residents in the pastoral counties have no physical boundaries but with this land registration it will result to formality of land boundaries and the community leaders will dialogue the way forward but not like in the past”, revealed Dahir.
His words were lauded by his Baringo counterpart, Dr. Joel Kibiwott who added that after sharing experience with their colleagues they have been able to collect issues which are there.
“Once the land is registered we shall be able to solve ownership issues and control grazing areas which in turn will solve cattle rustling and curb companies which find it difficult in compensating residents as they don’t have any legal document”, he added.
In his remarks, Benedict Lentumunai CEC land Samburu County said they are taking stock of the unregistered land in their counties which will assist illegal selling of community land.
