Contractor given 12 weeks ultimatum for delivery

Nyandarua County Commissioner Amos Mariba has given a 12 weeks ultimatum to a contractor to have refrigerators installed at the Ol kalou potato cold storage facility that was commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2019.

According to Mariba the completion of the Shs 100 million cold storage was long overdue.

He said that they were earlier prompted to change the initial contractor after he availed refrigerators that were not up to standard hence issuing the contract to the current contractor.

The commissioner said that building works were ready and the generators have already been purchased awaiting delivery and installation.

He added that the cold storage facility will go in line in reduction of post-harvest losses in the potato value chain noting that production, processing, storage and transportation of food, improvements need to happen to ensure food safety, quality and minimum waste through cold chain solutions.

Farmers in the county have been losing about 40 percent of their produce due to lack of storage facilities.

On her part, the secretary to the presidential delivery unit in central Kenya Louisa Matemo said that the project is among many that were at advance stages in the county.

She noted that the County Coordination and Implementation Committee was overseeing the projects to ensure that there was not any bottleneck towards completion of the projects.
