County Askaris and police officers escape attack in Huruma

On Tuesday ,a  group of Nairobi County ‘Askaris’ and police officers were forced to dash for their lives after they were attacked by a criminal gang in Huruma estate.

The county inspectorate officers were on a mission to demolish condemned buildings in the area before the gang struck and hurled stones at them forcing them to abandon the mission.

According to locals, police officers who were sent to provide security during the demolition lobbed tear gas canisters at the gang before they were overpowered, leaving them with no option but to dash for safety.

One of the residents said that the gang had become so notorious that it has been robbing residents in broad daylight and even raping some of their victims.

“We normally watch from balconies of our houses and since we fear for our lives we cannot do anything,” the resident told a local daily.

In May, after a building collapsed in Huruma killing 51 people, the National Construction Authority (NCA) released a list of 204 unsafe residential buildings in Nairobi that were set to be demolished.
