A Milimani Law Court has granted custodial orders allowing the detention of John Kyama Wambua, the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, Joy Fridah Munani.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has stated that the orders, issued by Hon. Gilbert O. Shikwe (PM) on January 23, 2025, allow for Wambua to be detained at Ruaraka Police Station for a period of 21 days, facilitating the completion of the investigation.
Additionally, the court has authorized a mental essessment of the suspect at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital
“The gruesome case came to light when police officers patrolling Huruma’s Kasanova area within Nairobi County noticed Wambua acting suspiciously with a bag. A search revealed human body parts, later identified as belonging to his wife,” the ODPP said.
According to the report by the ODPP Wambua led officers to his home, where more remains were found.
He also confessed to killing Munani after allegedly finding her with another man, claiming an argument escalated into violence. Wambua then dismembered her body to dispose of it.
The ODPP said that Investigators are yet to recover all body parts and a second murder weapon suspected to be a panga.
“Key tasks, including DNA testing, postmortem, and witness statements, remain incomplete.”
The prosecution, represented by Ms. Judy Chirie, argued that Wambua poses a flight risk and may tamper with evidence if granted release.
The case is scheduled for mention on February 22, 2025.
