In a bold call to action, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Aden Duale, has urged the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) to ensure that its research programs and activities are fully aligned with the 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme.

This initiative is part of the 10-year National Landscape & Ecosystem Restoration Strategy, which aims to elevate Kenya’s tree cover to 30% by 2032.

Speaking during a recent engagement with KEFRI, CS Duale emphasized the critical role the institution plays in driving the country’s socio-economic transformation and supporting livelihoods through sustainable forestry practices.

He highlighted that achieving the ambitious target of 15 billion trees is not just about increasing forest cover but also about promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change.

The Cabinet Secretary called on KEFRI to leverage its research capabilities to develop innovative solutions that enhance tree planting efforts, improve seedling quality, and ensure the survival and growth of planted trees across diverse Kenyan landscapes.

“The development of technologies such as the Jaza Miti App is a testament to your innovative spirit. This app has revolutionized how we approach tree planting and forest management, providing a user-friendly platform for Kenyans to actively participate in reforestation efforts,” Hon.Duale said.

Hon. Duale said KEFRI’s research activities contribute to the country’s socio-economic transformation by supporting livelihoods in addition to strengthening Kenya’s environmental sustainability.

“It is through such initiatives that we can make significant strides towards achieving our national goals of environmental sustainability and climate resilience,” CS Duale said.

The Cabinet Secretary, who was accompanied by Forestry PS Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, assured of his commitment to addressing policy challenges hindering the institution from achieving its broad mandate.

Hon. Duale acknowledged KEFRI’s request for a robust monitoring and evaluation mechanism in the distribution of certified tree seeds to ensure higher germination rates.

“We must strengthen this system to ensure that all activities, especially those that directly impact our farmers and foresters, are delivering the expected results,” CS Duale said.

The 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme is a flagship project of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, with a vision to create a sustainable and resilient environment for all Kenyans.

Through partnerships and innovative approaches, the initiative seeks to restore degraded landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and support Kenya’s commitment to global environmental agreements.
