In efforts to bridge the gap and the challenges facing the sports sector, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Sports Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled a taskforce to review the Sports Act, 2013.According to the CS the sports sector has long struggled with gaps in laws and policies, enabling corruption, favoritism, and mismanagement by federations.

This initiative seeks to eradicate corruption, favoritism, and mismanagement, ushering in an era of transparency, accountability, and professionalism.

“To address this, I unveiled a Taskforce to review the Sports Act, 2013, and develop a robust legislative framework that promotes transparency, aligns with the Constitution, and keeps pace with the evolving sports landscape,” stated CS Murkomen.

The new framework will align with the Constitution and respond to the evolving dynamics of sports, ensuring Kenya remains competitive on the global stage.

Additionally, the taskforce will define clear roles for the government in promoting sports, regulating academies, and managing stadia while restructuring key agencies to distinctly separate policy-making from operations.

“The Taskforce will define government roles in promoting sports, regulating academies, and managing stadia, while restructuring key agencies to separate policy from operations,” noted the CS.

In order to ensure inclusivity and address the diverse needs of the sports sector, the Taskforce will conduct comprehensive nationwide consultations.

“Through nationwide consultations, the team will identify priorities and deliver a framework within six months to guide reforms,” stated CS Murkomen.

The reforms are expected to complement the ongoing infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of the new Talanta Stadium and the modernization of Nyayo, Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino stadia to international standards.
