Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has called on Kenyan youths to exercise responsibility social media usage, decrying its misuse to mock leaders.
Speaking at a Girls’ Football Tournament in Matuga Constituency, an event organized by area MP Kassim Tandaza, CS Mvurya emphasized the importance of respect in online interactions.
“Technology should help us when there is respect. It shouldn’t be an opportunity because people are using the internet incognito to besmirch leaders, and the President that is not the intention of Technology,” stated CS Mvurya.
The Cabinet Secretary underscored the government’s investment in youth development through education, talent nurturing, and technology.
He highlighted the digital economy as a transformative platform for self-employment and urged youths to leverage it for constructive purposes.
“We’ve identified Digital Economy is vital and that is why many youths are self-employed to do online jobs,” he added.
Mombasa Women Representative Zamzam Mohamed echoed Mvurya’s sentiments, urging parents to reprove children exhibiting inappropriate behavior online and respect for leaders.
“Parents let’s talk to our children. There are politics and boundaries, you can criticize a leader on development but not to belittle leaders,” said Mohamed.
She called on youths to respect leaders, noting that constructive criticism is welcome but should be devoid of disrespect.
The event demonstrated a shared commitment among leaders to foster unity, respect, and responsibility among Kenyan youths while promoting development and digital inclusivity.
