Deadly weapons that are supposedly used by Somalia-based Al Shabaab militants to attack passengers have been recovered by police.
In a tight counter-terrorism operation conducted on 8th Friday, security agents seized thousands of bullets and rifles among other weapons believed to be the ones used in the recent ambushes on buses traveling to the North Eastern region, especially Mandera County.
The mission conducted in El Wak area led to recovery of bullet belts, pistols, six AK 47 rifles, Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPG) and launchers.
The operation mounted in the region which has faced several attacks on passenger buses and government vehicles, was aimed at dismantling terror groups in the area.
Report indicate that locals in the area were aware of militants who had been staging ambushes but have been reluctant to expose their hideouts.
“There should be collaboration between the locals and their leaders and most important, a robust relation between the security officials and the local political leadership. These relationships will help destroy criminal and terror cells,” an officer privy to the operation was quoted by a local daily.
A week ago, six people lost their lives and scores injured near El Wak after suspected Al Shabaab fighters sprayed two buses with bullets.
Days before, five police officers were killed and their bodies burnt after their vehicle was hit using an RPG as they were escorting traveler in the same county.
