Death traps will remain until workers’ safety is assured

A bulldozer demolishes one of the unsafe houses in Mathare North area one following a directive to have all unsound residential buildings in Nairobi demolished.

The planned demolition of unsafe residential buildings in Nairobi was yesterday put on hold after NYS director general Richard Ndubai complained about the safety of his personnel.

Lands executive Christopher Khaemba said Ndubai complained that his officers were pelted with stones by goons in the past and they will only resume work if their safety is guaranteed.

“We have already assembled the machinery, but the director general raised pertinent issues that we had to listen to,” Khaemba said.

He said he and Ndubai were to meet Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet yesterday to address security of the personnel.
