Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to consider the requests of traders at Wakulima Market regarding the proposed move to Kangundo Market.
On Thursday, traders organized protests demanding that the government rescind the notice, arguing that the Kangundo market is already occupied. They further expressed that the eviction notice was issued with insufficient notice, and that vacating the Wakulima Market would result in their unemployment.
Taking to his X platform Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reminded Nairobi Governor on the promises they made to the people during campaigns in 2022 general elections.
“My younger brother Governor Johnson Sakaja, traders from Wakulima Market in Nairobi County, have called me and reminded me of the undertaking you and I jointly gave them in July 2022 as I campaigned for you in Muthurwa,” DP Gachagua said on X.
“Kindly, do consider having a sitting with the leadership of the market to agree on whatever changes your Government desires without adversely affecting their livelihoods. These traders gave your their trust and vote, and it is only fair you give them an ear,” DP Gachagua added.
“Kindly, forgive me if I appear intrusive, but they are coming to me as I was your guarantor in matters of trust, Please my brother,” the DP noted.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja responded to the public appeal by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regarding the relocation of Wakulima market traders who were opposing the move by Nairobi County government.
Also taking to social media Nairobi Governor urged the Deputy President to stop attempting reaching him via social media but rather to call him directly.
“My elder brother H.E Rigathi Gachagua, You have my number,” Governor Sakaja stated.
In response to the protests that occurred on Thursday, the Nairobi County government upheld its intentions to relocate the traders, highlighting the necessity of tackling congestion and other challenges that affects the city of Nairobi.
