“The incident dates back to May 27, 2022, when Yunus Hamza Hussein, masquerading as a savvy salesperson at Rana Motors along Ngong Road, duped an unsuspecting victim with promises of delivering two vehicles, a Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L for Sh2.9 million. Enticed by the charade, the victim paid a hefty deposit of Sh1.1 million, only to watch the fraudster vanish into thin air,” explained the DCI.
However, after receiving the funds, Hussein vanished without a trace, leaving the victim in distress.
Following months of intelligence gathering and forensic tracking, detectives traced Hussein to his hideout at Crystal Apartments in Athi River, where they seized multiple SIM cards linked to fraudulent transactions.
Upon interrogation, Hussein led the investigators to his accomplice, Brian Omweri, who was arrested in Makongeni, Thika.
A crucial SIM card linked to a Sh550,000 transaction from the victim was recovered, further cementing their involvement in the scam.
The two suspects are currently in police custody as authorities finalize investigations.
They duo is expected to face charges of obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud, among other offenses.
