Detectives in Kibwezi, Makueni County have successfully retrieved 129 bags of rice that were previously stolen during transit from Mombasa.
This incident occurred on December 21, when a truck driver was confronted by highway robbers in the Machinery area of Kambu.
The driver reported the incident at Makindu Police Station, claiming that he was overpowered by a gang that arrived on motorcycles.
After assaulting him, they took control of the loaded truck and subsequently abandoned him in the vicinity of Makindu. The group, consisting of four individuals, unloaded 500 bags of rice, each weighing 25 kg, from the truck before leaving the empty vehicle behind and dividing the stolen goods among themselves.
“The gang of four offloaded the 500 bags each weighing 25kg of rice from the truck, thereafter abandoning the empty lorry and sharing the loot amongst themselves,” stated the DCI.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reported that, following a tip-off, officers from DCI Makindu executed a raid at the residence of a suspect named Alex Mweti Kasina, aged 42.
Upon learning of the police presence in the area, he and his wife fled the scene. During the operation, authorities discovered 129 bags of stolen items outside his home, and investigations are currently underway to apprehend the gang and retrieve the remaining stolen goods.
“Outside his house, 129 bags of the stolen goods were found, and investigations are ongoing to arrest the gang and recover the remaining bags,” added the DCI.
Police have intensified efforts to apprehend the suspect, his accomplices and recover the remaining bags.
