Djibouti Fronts Mahmoud Ali Youssouf For AU Job

The race for the AU chairmanship intensifies with Djibouti announcing the candidature of their Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

In a communiqué dated 9th April, from the office of the president, Djibouti officially announced the candidacy of Mahmoud expressing their faith in his abilities.” The Republic of Djibouti officially announces the candidacy of its Minister of Foreign Affairs, M Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, for the post of President of the African Union Commission.” Read the statement in part.

Djibouti further affirmed their faith in Mahmoud by indicating that he is a man of experience and a seasoned diplomat who is versed in the inner workings of the African Union. The country further stated that Mahmoud has the ability to breathe new life into the pan-African Organization.

Djibouti highlighted the credentials of their Foreign Affairs Minister, which include over twenty years of experience serving as a Minister of Foreign Affairs, exceptional abilities in conflict resolution, and adept negotiation skills.

” Mr. Mahmoud Youssouf has all the assets to meet the expectations and interests of the continent. He speaks French, English, and Arabic fluently.” Praised the country.

Mahmoud brings the total number of candidates for the position to three, competing against Kenya’s own Raila Odinga and Somalia’s Fawzia Yusuf Adam.

Raila Odinga and His Excellency William Samoei Ruto have been going around the continent seeking support from several African Leaders to cement Kenya’s position in the race.

Raila had previously announced that seven heads of state have agreed to back him for the position, including Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Salva Kiir (South Sudan), Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa), Felix Tshisekendi (DRC) and Paul Kagame (Rwanda).

President Ruto recently secured Ghana’s support during his state visit to the country. Angola and Guinea Bissau have also pledged to support Kenya’s bid for the seat.
