The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has issued a notice for a week-long nationwide strike, following the Ministry of Health not meeting its demands.
“We at this moment issue a 7-day notice for a nationwide strike. Irreducible minimums include promotion, medical cover, internship posting, postgraduate fee payment, study leaves and pension,” the notice on their X page read today.
The Union’s National Executive Council have demanded an apology from Interior CS Kindiki Kithure, to them as well as Kenyans at large. They also demanded that Kindiki confirm that there was no silent government policy to harm those who attempted to hold them accountable.
The union also called for the Inspector General of Police and The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to initiate disciplinary action on the rogue police officer who shot the Secretary-General and prosecute him for attempted murder and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm within 24 hours.
This demand would expire at midnight on the 1st day of March 2024.
Finally, the union demanded that the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Susan Nakhumicha, condemn the unwarranted violence against healthcare workers immediately post the Medical Interns, and pay all school fees for postgraduate students.
The union also demanded the government and the National Treasury set up a task force to resolve all the Healthcare Human Resources Affairs.
