By Debra Rono

President William Ruto has today officiated the swearing-in ceremony for Attorney General Dorcas Oduor and Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development Beatrice Askul on Tuesday morning at the Nairobi State House.

The President expressed his strong belief in the capabilities of both women, who are set to assume their roles immediately following the ceremony.

In his remarks, President Ruto highlighted the significance of Dorcas Oduor’s appointment as the first female Attorney General in Kenya.

“I am very confident and clear that you will not only make us as a country proud but also demonstrate that what a man can do, a woman can do even better. Many people will be watching,” President Ruto said.

He further acknowledged Oduor’s unique achievement of rising through the ranks to attain the position of Attorney General.

“You are the first person to grow through the ranks and become the head of that institution,I have no doubt in my mind that you have what it takes,” the president acknowledged.

The President advised Oduor to familiarize herself with the government’s manifesto to effectively serve the Kenyan populace. He noted that she assumes office at a pivotal moment, as the Attorney General’s office has lagged behind the judiciary in its capacity to fulfil its advisory role to both the government and the citizens of Kenya.

Additionally, President Ruto urged AG Oduor, who previously served as the Secretary of Public Prosecutions, to collaborate with other government agencies to ensure access to justice and provide legal representation for the government.

“It is very important Madam Attorney General that you work with all the other agencies to make sure that responsibility and legal representation to the government and people of Kenya is timely, robust and appropriate,” added the president.

President William Ruto conveyed his assurance regarding the appointment of Beatrice Askul as the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development.

He commended her as an “astute” leader, having known her for two decades.

The President emphasized the significance of her role in promoting Kenyan products within the East African market and in enhancing business investment opportunities.

“East Africa represents the largest market for Kenyan goods. The East African Community (EAC) stands as the most progressive entity on the African continent,” he stated.

Furthermore, President Ruto noted that as CS, Beatrice Askul will become ex-officio member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), tasked with collaborating with fellow legislators to develop policies aimed at fostering the growth of the East African Community and serving its entire membership.

“You bear a responsibility not only to Kenya but also to our brothers and sisters within the East African Community,” he remarked.

Last week, Parliament approved the nominations of both Dorcas Oduor and Beatrice Askul for the positions of Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development, respectively.
