DPP Secures Conviction In Major Transnational Drug Trafficking Case

By Dorothy Musyoka

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has successfully secured convictions against Joyce Akinyi and her accomplices, Paulin Kalala (a Congolese national) and Peres Ochieng, in a high-profile case of trafficking in narcotics drugs.

The case was prosecuted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) courts by Norah Achieng, Annette Wangia, and Faith Mwila.

According to ODPP, the prosecution presented compelling evidence linking the trio to a transnational drug trafficking syndicate.

“Prosecution, represented by Norah Achieng, Annette Wangia and Faith Mwila proferred evidence that Joyce Akinyi, together with her accomplices Paulin Kalala (a Congolese national) and Peres Ochieng were the masterminds of a well orchestrated transnational drug trafficking scheme,” stated the ODPP.

In addition to drug trafficking charges, Akinyi was found guilty of possessing a passport without providing a reasonable explanation.

“Joyce Akinyi was also convicted of being in possession of a passport without a reasonable explanation,” noted the ODPP.

The judgment was delivered in the absence of Peres Ochieng, who absconded court after being placed on her defense.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 10, 2024.
